A famous brand of pork pie is going for speciality protected status under European law. The status will cover the sourcing of the ingredients, the recipe used and the authenticity of the making. It is not, of itself, a guarantee of quality. For quality the food industry has to look elsewhere, perhaps to the Slow Food movement, which requires food to be clean, good and fair. The status does, however, specify the type of ingredients to be used.
As with cheeses or wine, there is a whole range of pies of very different types and quality. Indeed, there is a great variety of pork pies. The intention is, however, that anyone who buys a Melton Mowbray pork pie will know what they are getting. How come we can sort it for pies but not for young people? There is an enormous range of paid staff and volunteers who work with young people - these include a distinct cohort of youth professionals, and I include volunteers in this term as there are a number of very professional volunteers.
