The National Youth Agency: Comment - Happy birthdays

1 min read
January is the month of birthdays in my family. It is important to make proper time to ensure that each individual feels special and appreciated; not always easy in the middle of a glum, damp month. In the idle moments between frantic preparations, I got to think about the role of birthdays and anniversaries.

It is 250 years, for example, since the birth of Robert Burns. It was interesting to hear a presentation on the value of Burns to the Scottish economy; he was more than a poet of love, of the value of individuals and the strength of human solidarity. It is 200 years since the birth of Darwin and we are using this moment to better understand evolution. It is now 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which heralded a new landscape for European politics and symbolised a better future for all our peoples. With the inauguration of President Obama we are setting the baseline for a future celebration.
