The National Youth Agency: Comment - Taking a stand on Wikipedia kids

As a writer I naturally have an interest in the way the English language develops and so one of the more welcome emails in my inbox most mornings is entitled Word Spy.

Run by a chap called Paul McFedries, (props to you, Paul) Word Spy keeps a sharp eye on zeitgeisty coinages, providing a quick definition and couple of quotations demonstrating its usage.

Yesterday's phrase was "Wikipedia kid", and the definition - "a student who has poor research skills and lacks the ability to think critically". This certainly chimed with comments I hear from friends and colleagues who teach in schools and universities about students who want to be told "where the answer is". It's not enough to suggest they read Hamlet, or Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams - they want to know the page references and the line number for the words they can put in their paper that will give them an extra mark.
