What you were doing can be seen as building resilience - helping young people ride the blows and move forward. It's one of the things youth work is good at, and that's why we've made "resilient" one half of the theme for Youth Work Week.
We hope it's not construed as being about somehow making young people resigned to their fate. It's absolutely not about learning to accept your lot, but about recognising that people have the power to transform their situation. Sometimes that will mean reframing a problem and not letting it get to you. Equally, it may be precisely about recognising your right to be angry at something and the steps you take to achieve change.
