The National Youth Agency: Comment - Strike up the band to welcomewider Europe

An additional chorus of this European anthem honoured the Woodcraft Folk who, during the dark years, kept an opening to young people in their sister organisations in central and eastern Europe in the face of UK governmental hostility. Another chorus lauds all British youth organisations who seek to strengthen European solidarity and youth work despite much official indifference. Many have been helped in this process by the sterling efforts of Connect Youth International, a department of the British Council and the national agency here for the EU's youth programmes. A new generation of these programmes will shortly come on stream: combating xenophobia and championing diversity is an enduring task.
