So which performer best encapsulates the soul of youth work?

This is a matter of personal taste and no doubt there are advocates for such current celebrities as Eminem or Beyonce Knowles, though these often turn out to be nine-day wonders. The Beatles, Joan Armatrading or Van Morrison have their fans. One of my colleagues at The National Youth Agency will, somewhat optimistically I can't help feel, bid for Jose Carreras.

But my vote is for Joan Baez, still going strong after 40 years and currently touring the UK. Back when youth work was young, her specialisms - the folk song and the anti-war song - were the music of choice. As the years went by, Baez extended her repertoire so that it now contains themes which are at the centre of youth work.
