Some youth workers who appear to hold widely different ideological positions are often united by their distaste for the role of government, including local government. Some align with right-of-centre theorists who invariably favour a diminished place for state intervention and favour the voluntary sector. They ignore the common equity of that shared sense of public service with the young which transcends the artificial boundaries between local authorities and voluntary bodies in youth work.

Meanwhile, coming out of left field, are those quick to denounce national government's interventions, including the latest, which seeks to create and fund a new architecture for youth services. Thus Resourcing Excellent Youth Services is portrayed as threatening the very basis of youth work.
