The black humour of the terraces compensated for the team's performance and invariably included the despairing injunction - "Get stuck in, Reds!"
I was reminded of this concept by Bertie Everard, inveterate national champion for youth work with particular reference to the voluntary sector, outdoor adventure and the YMCA. Latterly, Everard has been campaigning for better local provision for young people and for greater transparency about what is being provided for them by the local borough council (Welwyn and Hatfield) and the county council (Hertfordshire). He has not had much success in securing from them even the basic facts about spending. (Checking our annual audit, I discovered that Hertfordshire was one of several local authorities that did not make a return.)
