The National Youth Agency: Comment - Forget wealth, do health

1 min read
Banking cataclysms apart, the last few weeks have been full of good news about the potential for youth work involvement in the most vital area of young people's lives - their health and wellbeing. The strategy from the Departments for Children, Schools and Families and Health - Healthy Lives, Brighter Futures - is not, on the surface, chock full of bright new schemes and tons of money for our work. But, make no mistake, this is an important document from two Whitehall giants and there are plenty of possibilities for enhancing health focused personal development. Here's five reasons to be cheerful:

One - across the health system, the voice and influence of young people will become the norm rather than the exception, including the roll out of the DH's You're Welcome scheme. In youth work, our next challenge is to help get You're Welcome driven from the ground by young people, running the rule over local provision and pushing forward for a central place in health commissioning and delivery.

Two - better training and development; getting hard pressed part-time staff to the table will require a specific push, including the best of web-based learning and for all a better and more consistent package at local and national training levels.
