I can remember the book that marked my crossing of the Rubicon. Moonfleet, by John Meade Falkner. I'd have been 11 or 12. Not the most notable author, nor the greatest of great literature I grant you, but a rollicking Boys' Own-style adventure story of pirates, treasure and heroism written in late Victorian times that kept the pages turning nicely (don't bother with the third-rate film version though).
Anyway, for me, it had all the magic that Harry Potter has for today's generation.
I was reminded of this the other day by one of those coincidences. Everything crossing my desk seemed to involve reading in some way. There were copies hot off the press of The Agency's Reading Kit 3 - see right for more details.
