The National Youth Agency: Comment - All I ask is a tall ship

1 min read
I'm something of an armchair adventurer these days - the heady days of setting out across the seas in a small boat seem long behind me.

But from the comfort of my fireside I still enjoy dipping into the literature of the sea and imagining myself out there. There's a wonderful Penguin anthology that I can recommend to you - Sea Longing - which captures the power and majesty of the sea. "Both thrilling and terrifying, the sea evokes romance, escape and adventure on the one hand and the fear of death by drowning on the other," as its blurb tells us.

This love of the sea is one of the reasons why I've always been a keen supporter of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), whose volunteer crews and lifeguards put their own lives on the line to save others, providing a 24 hours a day seven days a week search and rescue service around the United Kingdom. A bit like the Fire and Rescue Service (see story right) on land, except staffed by volunteers and funded by voluntary donation.
