Could one see a similar scene in England? One fears not. There are the various county orchestras and local rap or pop groups of variable quality but these rarely seem to have an indigenous or organic feel. Of course, Connemara is unusual - but, for Ireland, not that unusual. Nor would it be exceptional in many parts of central and Eastern Europe. These communities seem committed to sustaining a cultural life for the young, to maintaining and refreshing their communal heritage. To the horror of purists, Riverdance took Irish dancing to new levels of sensuality but also renewed the value of this art form for the young.
