With funding from the Home Office Active Communities Unit, The NYA ran the scheme with 10 projects, chosen from a total of 88 applications. The programme was designed to boost community cohesion by equipping young people with the skills for leadership and enabling them to influence decisions that affect their communities. As well as developing the skills needed for leadership, youth workers helped young people learn to listen effectively, and to engage with different people who might have opposing attitudes and beliefs. With the projects now completed, five of the 10 were able to attend the celebration event on 19 July 2005, in the presence of Pat McFadden MP and Paul Goggins MP, Home Office minister for volunteering, as well as representatives from The National Youth Agency.
