The National Youth Agency: Briefing paper considers issues and barriers for weekend opening

1 min read
A new briefing paper from The National Youth Agency for the Department for Children, Schools and Families sets out the central issues and barriers for children's trusts in expanding their provision of positive activities on Friday and Saturday nights.

It demonstrates ways in which local authorities are addressing these barriers and some more general points for all local areas to consider when delivering provision on Fridays and Saturdays.

Key messages emerging from the research include the importance of securing an appropriate offer of activities which are accessible and interesting. Although provision already exists there is recognition of the need to increase it. Young people appear to want less structured, more recreational activities on weekend evenings. While having "a place to chill" is important they also welcome opportunities to take part in music and creative arts, sports and, in general want a wide range of activities.
