The National Youth Agency: Briefing explores how best to engage with young drinkers

1 min read
How to engage with young people who may have been drinking is the focus of new guidance from the government's Youth Taskforce. A helpful briefing on the guidance features in the latest issue of The Edge, the National Youth Agency's newspaper for local authority elected members, out now.

With youth services continuing to expand their Friday and Saturday night provision, more and more youth workers are having to work with young people who may be under the influence of alcohol. The new guidance offers policy and practice guidelines on dealing safely with those who may have consumed alcohol and on delivering positive activities that offer an alternative to hanging around drinking.

The guidance states that numbers of young people drinking have been falling in recent years, but that those who do drink are putting themselves and others at greater risk. Some 10,000 young people are admitted to hospital each year after drinking alcohol and by the age of 16 one in five young people will have been caught up in violence after drinking.
