The National Youth Agency: Access - Emotional intelligence is key to unlocking teenagers' learning

Emotional intelligence is one of the keys that can unlock learning and achievement for young people and young adults who complain that, for them, "learning sucks", claims a new briefing paper from the Young Adults Learning Partnership (YALP).

Emotional Intelligence by Bryan Merton says that "Emotional health is fundamental to effective learning. Researchers have concluded that people who manage their own feelings well and deal effectively with others are more likely to live contented and productive lives. Such people are also more likely to retain information and use it more effectively than those who are depressed or unhappy."

The briefing uses case studies to illustrate the power of effective learning and how this requires people to engage fully with the subject and the activity, creating a cycle of greater motivation leading to achievement that in turn brings recognition. This enhances confidence leading to improved motivation. The full briefing is available at the NIACE website: www.niace.org.uk. YALP is a joint initiative between NIACE and The National Youth Agency.
