The Family Fund

1 min read
What it is: The Family Fund is a national grant-making charity, which is jointly funded by the governments of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It exists to provide grants to families with severely disabled children, based on families' specific needs. The fund is committed to making society more inclusive, so grants are given to help provide equal opportunities for disabled children and their carers.

How much is on offer: The fund distributed £28.2m to 50,000 families between 2006 and 2007. Each application is considered on its individual merit.

What it will fund: Grants can be awarded to finance anything from holidays and outings to computers, clothing, bedding, specialist equipment and goods, including washing machines, fridges and freezers. The fund's main requirement is that grants must relate to the disabled child's needs. The fund cannot offer money for any service or items that a statutory agency is required to provide.

Who can apply: The Family Fund is open to UK families with children and young people aged 15 and under who have a severe disability. Families' earned income (not including benefits) must be less than £23,000, or £25,000 for Welsh families, excluding overtime and bonuses. Applicants' savings must total less than £18,000. Families whose sole income is derived from benefits are eligible to apply.
