
First, I believe that our justice system does not provide adequate punishment for crimes. I believe that if someone possesses a knife this should incur a prison sentence, not just a telling off, because if they carry a knife they must be willing to use it. This should act as a deterrent to people, but would also give victims some assurance in the system. If we are to tackle increasing street crime, then positive punishment is needed for the protection of victims and for future generations. Knife crime is the first step to a life of crime. To stop career criminals, I would make a form of national service for one year an automatic sentence for under-25s who re-offend. This would discourage criminals, and teach them discipline and a sense of purpose.
