Teacher body calls for race inspection

Education
Ofsted should inspect schools on race equality, according to guidance published by the General Teaching Council for England last week.

The General Teaching Council (GTC) said it should be part of inspections since schools are struggling to meet their legal duties under the Race Relations Act. Teachers also need better training about race equality to improve outcomes for children and comply with the law, according to the guidance.

The GTC recommended teacher-training courses include a "significant element on promoting race equality". It also said school heads and governors should receive appropriate tuition on the practicalities of developing racial equality and meeting legal requirements.

The guidance also stated that schools must implement a race-equality policy, to be promoted to all students and staff. The advice was developed following discussions at the Race Equality Forum hosted by the GTC.
