Sector hails wellbeing inspection plans

Ofsted's controversial proposals to inspect schools on their contribution to pupil wellbeing have been welcomed by children's services sector.

The plans, revealed in a consultation document published last week, include proposals to evaluate schools on attendance levels, the number of pupils eating school meals, sex and relationships education provision, permanent exclusions rates and the quality of extended services. Anne Longfield, chief executive of children's charity 4Children, said the proposals were "the next essential step" for the watchdog. "We really welcome incorporating extended services into inspections," she said. "This moves everyone on from the perception that extended services are just about improved academic achievement."
