Talking Point: What do young people know about sexually transmitted infections?

More and more young people are sexually active, yet how much do they know about sexual health? Start a discussion about how they can protect themselves from infection.

Staggering sexual health statistics released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) last month revealed that one in 10 young people aged 15 to 24 diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) will become reinfected within a year. Young women seem to be the most vulnerable.

In 2009, around two-thirds of new STI diagnoses were in young women under the age of 25.

Start a discussion about sexual health and STIs. How much do young people know about them? What do young people understand by the term "sexual health"?

HPA's figures showed that young people are more likely to have unprotected sex because they often lack the confidence to discuss safe sex. Ask young people if they would speak up about safe sex. Consider how some people might be too embarrassed. Why is it important to have safe sex?
