Talking Point: Do young people know about dangers of exposure to the sun?

2 mins read Youth Work
As temperatures increase, young people will be spending more time in the sun. Start a discussion about the dangers of sunburn and skin cancer, and how to stay safe in the sun.

With the UK basking in scorching temperatures, it's no surprise that the Met Office issued a heatwave alert earlier this month to warn people about the health risks of hot weather. Summer is the perfect time for young people to get active outdoors, but how can they enjoy themselves and stay safe in the sun?

Start a discussion about the risks of excessive sun exposure. What damage can it do? Ask young people how much they know about the dangers of sunburn. Sunburn is caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays found in sunlight. In severe cases, the skin can be so badly damaged that it may blister. Consider how extreme sunburn can be life-threatening. Ask young people if they've experienced sunburn. How bad was it? While the visual effects of sunburn may fade, young people should consider the permanent damage it causes.
