- With too much exposure to UV light, the skin overheats and becomes red and painful. Last month, a 10-year-old girl in Swansea suffered burns over 70 per cent of her body after spending 16 minutes on an unsupervised sunbed
- Severe sunburn can cause blistering, swelling of the skin and fever. UV light causes changes in the surface and deeper layers of the skin and can increase the risk of malignant melanoma (skin cancer)
- You are more at risk of sunburn if you are: in a country that is close to the equator, at a high altitude, outdoors in a sunny climate between 11am and 3pm, or near snow, ice or water as the sun's rays can reflect onto your skin
