Tackling causes of riots, six months on

3 mins read Youth Justice
The riots last August resulted in millions of pounds of damage, more than 4,000 arrests and represented the biggest display of civil disobedience in a generation.

Despite the fact that only a quarter of those arrested were aged under 18, the events sparked major questions about how young people grow up in England.

But six months on, and following a glut of reports and surveys, concerns are surfacing that not enough is being done to address the issues behind the disturbances.

Darra Singh, chair of the Riots Communities and Victims Panel, says its report, due to be published next month, will make wide-ranging recommendations that are likely to require substantial resources.

These include how to improve aspiration and paths to employment for young people, as well as exploring how commercial brands can use their influence for the good of communities.
