The surge in supporters, who include children's author Philip Pullman, has put the campaign in the top 50 petitions on the Prime Minister's website.
Dr Richard House, one of Open EYE's founders, said: "It is difficult to imagine that the government won't be moved to make at least some modifications to its EYFS legislation in the light of such widespread public concern."
However, early years professionals are divided. Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of National Day Nurseries Association, said: "In theory, the EYFS framework should make it easier for providers as it brings together the foundation stage, Ofsted regulations and Birth to Three Matters."
