Sure Start: Hughes promises long-term funds

Funding for Sure Start will continue long-term, children's minister Beverly Hughes said last week.

Hughes made the pledge at a Local Government Chronicle conference heldlast week after local authority representatives asked for reassurance onthe long-term future of early years funding.

Local authorities told Hughes that they were labouring under uncertaintyover the future of the General Sure Start Grant, which funds childcareand Sure Start local programmes.

Hughes said funding would continue but she could not say in what form.
