MP seeks Sure Start funding clarity

Early Years
A Kent MP has asked the government to clarify what funding for Sure Start and family centres is ring fenced.

The local authority lobbied the government for additional nurseries funding in May. Allocations were agreed in August.

In a Parliamentary written question Derek Wyatt, the Labour MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, has asked for confirmation on what funding is ring fenced, and what flexibility there is in how it is spent.

Children’s minister Beverley Hughes said money ring fenced for Sure Start Local Programmes has to be spent in this area, on existing centres.

She added that the Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare Grant includes separate funding for the development of new and existing Sure Start centres by 2010.
