Surbiton ladettes turned into ladies

1 min read Youth Work
A group of 11- to 15-year-old schoolgirls are to be turned from "ladettes" into "ladies" as part of a Christian youth work project in south-west London.

The Ladettes to Ladies project will challenge the group of pupils from Hollyfields School in Surbiton to abandon aggressive behaviour and become active members of their community.

The project is being run by Oxygen, a partnership between churches in the borough of Kingston and Youth for Christ.

Oxygen's director Richard James said the girls would be challenged through a range of activities including street dance, camping, climbing, orienteering and devising a project to help their community. They would also be given journals to "keep their private reflections on their hopes, dreams and attitudes".

He said the aim was to "encourage these girls to become interactive, responsible role-playing members of the community". Oxygen is also planning a "graduation" dinner where the girls will be given certificates.
