Support for parents in 44m pound scheme

Children's Secretary Ed Balls has announced details of a 44m parenting programme to help families most in need, including parents of disabled children.

The money includes £17m for internet and helpline services.

The Parent Know-How programe, promised in The Children's Plan, includes a helpline for parents of disabled children run by Contact A Family.

Sarah Rush, head of advice and campaigns at the charity, said: "We want to inform parents on every aspect of raising a disabled child and put them in touch with family support groups so they feel less alone."

Parentline Plus also got a share of the cash to run a "virtual school gate" for parents of teenagers where they can share advice and support.

Counselling charity Relate and marriage and family charity Family Matters Institute will be given funding to run a service giving quick parenting answers to fathers via text messages.
