Substance misuse - Prison Service recruits staff for young offenders' drug scheme

The scheme aims to deal with all aspects of drug use, from prevention to detoxification, and includes setting up resettlement centres outside prison. It encompasses secure training centres (STCs) and local authority secure children's homes (LASCHs), as well as juvenile prisons.

The Youth Justice Board has incorporated its National Specification for Substance Misuse Services in its agreement with the Prison Service, and in its contracts with STCs and LASCHs.

STCs are in the process of recruiting substance misuse professionals to meet the requirements. LASCHs will work with local drug action teams.

Earlier this year, a survey for the Youth Justice Board, Substance Misuse and the Juvenile Secure Estate, found that young offenders were more likely to have taken drugs than their peers. It also found links between drug use and reoffending.
