Substance misuse: Positive Futures prepares for funding overhaul

Speaking at a Positive Futures conference last week, Vic Hogg said that while last year's spending review "was not as generous" as hoped, "there is a lot more money from other departments that is not being directed as effectively as it might have been". He added: "Our challenge is to galvanise the existing resources to best effect."

In the 2002 Spending Review, the crime-diversion programme was given 5.7m a year for three years, although there was no specific mention of funding for the scheme in the 2004 review.

But next month, six Positive Futures pilots will be launched where funding is channelled through local drug action teams. Currently, funding comes from the Home Office or the Football Foundation, which gives the scheme 1m a year.
