Substance misuse: NHS scheme helps teens stop smoking

The statistics reported that at least 36 per cent of 1,322 English under-18s on the scheme were still non-smokers four weeks on from the dates they set themselves to give up.

Anti-smoking pressure group Action on Smoking and Health (Ash) welcomed the results, but said the measures used didn't show the whole picture.

Amanda Sandford, research manager at Ash, said: "It is very good that more than a third have stopped. The problem is that it is easy to give up for a month, but much harder to give up for longer periods."
