Substance misuse: Focus on alcohol education needed

Drugs education is eclipsing teaching about drinking, a survey revealed last week.

A poll by the Drinkaware Trust found that 55 per cent of 11- to16-year-olds got more lessons about illegal drugs than on alcohol use.The survey also revealed that 43 per cent had more sex education thandrugs education and that 36 per cent received no advice about drinkingoutside of school.

The results have prompted the alcohol education charity to launchStreetwise, a pack to help teachers, parents and the police teach 11- to16-year-olds about drinking.

"For many years alcohol education has been the Cinderella of thecurriculum," said Jean Cousins, chief executive of the Drinkaware Trust."There is clearly a need for a resource like Streetwise."

The survey questioned 572 children in UK secondary schools.
