Studio school plan gathers pace

Education
Ministers at the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) are considering proposals for a new generation of schools designed to reform alternative education.

Plans for the so-called Studio Schools, which have been designed by charity the Young Foundation, aim to provide 14- to 19-year-olds with a cross between school and work.

The schools will offer an enterprise-based curriculum and will include operating businesses run by students.

The DCSF is expected to decide whether or not to approve the proposals next month. If approved the first school could be up and running in late 2009.

David Nicoll, senior advisor at the Young Foundation, said: "We're confident that our proposals will get the go-ahead. We had informal discussions with officials at the DCSF and they were impressed with our work. We genuinely believe these new schools will make a huge difference to young people."
