Student childcare falls short of target

1 min read Early Years Education
A government-funded scheme providing financial childcare support to students has been slammed for being poorly advertised and failing to target those most in need.

Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work is a £75m three-year scheme, launched last year to provide free childcare for workless parents accessing learning that leads to work.

But according to the Association of Learning Providers (ALP), the scheme is set to miss its annual target of 32,500 applicants by more than 7,500. The ALP also claims that only 1,002 applications have been approved for funding.

The figures were revealed in the latest meeting of the Learner Support Consultative Forum. Paul Warner, ALP's representative on the forum, said: "Independent learning providers are not aware of this scheme at all.

"I think publicity regarding availability is one factor, and there are probably other factors around eligibility that are compounding the problem."
