Older children suffer childcare gap

1 min read Early Years Health
The government has been urged to create a national strategy to address a lack of sufficient childcare provision for school-aged and disabled children.

The recommendation has been made in a policy paper on childcare written by single parent charity Gingerbread, seen exclusively by CYP Now.

Recent government changes mean many single parents are now expected to look for paid work in return for benefits. But, according to Gingerbread, the changes were not accompanied with a strategy to solve problems associated with the availability and cost of childcare. It points to gaps in provision for holiday childcare, school-aged and disabled children.

Kate Bell, Gingerbread's director of policy, said: "We're asking for analysis on a national level of why these gaps exist, and a look at what can be done. Is it because of insufficient funding or are we lacking an appropriate model to deliver childcare?"
