Childcare charity Daycare Trust's annual cost survey revealed that more than two-thirds of parents (69 per cent) were reporting a lack of childcare. This was only a one per cent improvement on last year's figure, despite local authorities having since carried out Childcare Sufficiency Assessments (CSAs) in a bid to ensure they meet their duty to provide sufficient childcare.
Emma Knights, joint chief executive at Daycare Trust, said the government should have instructed authorities on how to follow up assessments before the publication of this week's childcare strategy refresh. "The government could have been quicker off the mark in taking action. It was very focused on getting the CSAs in rather than pushing for action," she said.
