Sport: Amateur clubs could be missing out on benefits

1 min read

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport believes that about 40,000 amateur sports clubs across the UK are missing out on tax benefits and gift aid worth up to 150m.

While youth clubs are not eligible for the tax breaks, the department has confirmed that many of those missing out could be sports clubs with a youth focus.

A department spokesman said: "Some of the 40,000 clubs are likely to be youth sports clubs, but as far as exact figures go it is impossible to say."

Under the scheme, which was launched in April 2002, clubs that register as Community Amateur Sports Clubs are entitled to 80 per cent rate relief on business rates; increased exemption from corporation tax; and exemption from capital gains tax when selling off assets.
