Spending Review: Civil service job losses could affect youth work

1 min read

The Public and Commercial Services' Union warned that reductions in civil servant posts announced in the spending review would damage the Government's work with young people.

Tony Conway, the union president of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), said job cuts could result in the department's children, young people and families' directorate losing up to 35 per cent of its staff.

"We have concerns about workloads for the department's youth policy workers, as well as concerns regarding the level of service provided," said Conway.

He added: "A number of local authorities have been performing poorly and the Connexions service has been doing well. Connexions could be handed over to local government, but this should not happen until we know it can be successfully delivered by local government."
