Children's trusts: DfES job cuts point the way to future under children's trusts

1 min read

In a letter obtained by YPN, Tom Jeffery, the head of the DfES's children, young people and families directorate, said 390 jobs would go by 2008.

The cuts are part of a process to reduce DfES head office staff by 1,460.

They are needed because trusts will take over much of the directorate's service delivery and decision-making roles.

"The system will work most effectively if more decisions are taken by local agencies and closer to the front line. In the DfES, we should focus on fewer policy initiatives that have a more powerful impact," wrote Jeffery.

However, the Public and Commercial Services Union said the cuts could plunge children's trusts and Connexions into chaos.
