Special needs: Gap in provision for children with SEN

A study of the childcare needs of families with children with special educational needs has called for more in-depth research into the particular problems they face.

A new analysis of data from a 2000 Department of Education survey of parents by the National Centre of Social Research found parents of children with special educational needs struggled to find appropriate childcare.

Caroline Bryson, NatCen's deputy head of families and children, said there was a gap in the market both in terms of suitability and location.

Another NatCen analysis of the survey data, looking at the childcare needs of Black and minority ethnic families, found that Black families experienced the most problems accessing childcare.
