Special needs money under scrutiny

A government-ordered inquiry into special educational needs is to investigate problems in the funding system.

Ministers set up the Lamb Inquiry to look at how to boost parents' confidence in the special educational needs (SEN) system, but CYP Now has learned it will also examine why funding is not getting through to the children it is intended for.

The amount of money dedicated to SEN has increased during the last three years and increasingly local authorities have allowed schools to decide how this money is spent.

But Brian Lamb, who is chair of the Special Educational Consortium and is leading the inquiry, said it can be difficult to trace how money is spent, which risks damaging confidence in the system.
