SOCIAL EXCLUSION: Southwark pilot gets good response

The On Track pilot is part of a three-year national scheme that reaches vulnerable, at-risk young people through school-based services such as family therapy or learning support. It has reported improved behaviour and self-esteem among the young people involved.

The scheme, established by the Home Office in 1999 as part of its Crime Reduction Programme, was transferred in April 2001 to the Government's Children and Young People's Unit.

It uses home visits, parent support and training, family therapy and speech and language therapy.

Southwark is one of four London boroughs to pilot the programme.
