Social care: Plans to split adult training denied

The Government has denied it plans to announce a complete split between professional training for adult and children's social workers.

At last week's meeting of the Conservative Party's Social WorkCommission, the Social Care Institute for Excellence's chair AllanBowman said the move was imminent.

But a spokeswoman for the Department of Health said there were no plansto change current training. Social workers take the same degree andspecialise at postgraduate level.

The General Social Care Council also denied the move. Chief executiveLynne Berry said: "Social work is a single profession and requires ahigh level of common areas in initial training. Now is not the time toderail the modernisation of the profession."
