SOCIAL CARE NEWS: Social housing - Temporary homes 'reflect social gap'

The increase in Scottish households living in temporary accommodation highlights the "growing divide" between the haves and have-nots, says the British Association of Social Workers.

According to the Scottish Executive's just-published Social Justice - Indicators of Progress 2003 report, 1,620 households with dependent children were living in temporary accommodation as at 31 March 2003, up more than 10 per cent in a quarter and a rise of almost 25 per cent on 31 March 2002.

Since September 2002, Scottish councils have, however, been required to provide temporary accommodation to non-priority applicants that in the past would have received advice and assistance only.
