Homelessness: Trials aim to cut temporary housing

The Government has launched a trial scheme to help families out of temporary accommodation in London.

Local authorities and housing associations in London are being invitedto make proposals on how to reduce the number of households living intemporary accommodation. The trials will build on existing initiatives'such as Newham's "local space" scheme, which provides affordable housingby using money previously spent on costly temporary accommodation.

Housing charity Shelter welcomed the announcement. But a spokeswomansaid: "The only long-term solution is a commitment to build an extra16,000 new social rented homes in London between 2008 and 2011."

The proposals are in a Government report: Building on Success: London'sChallenge for 2012.
