1 min read
New fund established to feed children during the school holidays; youth services in Leicester face cuts; and number of children in temporary accommodation in Scotland on the rise, all in the news today.

Thousands of London children who go hungry during the school holidays will benefit from a new £1m fund to tackle the problem. The Evening Standard reports that the Mayor's Fund for London has launched a campaign, Kitchen Social, to provide free hot meals at 330 holiday club groups in some of the poorest parts of the capital.

Youth services in Leicester are facing cuts as part of efforts by the council to save £1m. The Leicester Mercury reports that Leicester City Council is proposing to reduce the amount of funding provided for services including youth clubs, one-to-one support for young people, and street-based youth work.

The number of children living in temporary accommodation in Scotland rose by 17 per cent last year. The Scotsman reports that Scottish Government statistics show that there were 10,570 households in temporary accommodation as of 30 September 2016, - an increase of 97 households compared with the same date a year earlier. More than a quarter of these included children or a pregnant member of the household - an increase of 13 per cent.

Private schoolchildren are "tougher" than their state-educated counterparts, a study has found. The Telegraph reports that research commissioned by the Independent Schools Council found that pupils at fee-paying schools are more controlled, committed and confident than those who went to state schools.

A new app dubbed "Facebook for seven-year-olds" has launched in a bid to make social media safer for kids. The Manchester Evening News reports that a former police chief has created a version of the site for younger children that lets children chat online with school friends, share jokes, pictures or videos.
