Social Care News: Social care workforce - Residential staff to takepriority

The General Social Care Council has recommended to the Government that staff in residential children's homes should have priority in the next phase of registering the social care workforce.

The recommended annual fee is 15, down from the 20 to30 originally proposed. However, the council's consultation showsthat nearly half of people don't support even this lower fee level, arguing that the sector is low paid.

The council also plans to start registering workers in residentialfamily centres and outreach services. Staff have to meet nationalminimum standards, piloted from September, to qualify.
