56 per 10,000 children are looked after (54 in England)

20% of looked-after children are aged one to four (15 per cent in England)

78% of looked-after children have care orders (64 per cent in England)

20% of looked-after children in care because their family is in acute stress (7 per cent in England)

Councillor John Mallinson, cabinet spokesman for care and social services, said: "We are committed to the development of quality services for children and families in Cumbria and this is reflected in the corporate strategy and a further 1m to promote the well-being of vulnerable people and their carers during 2004/05. Investment in prevention strategies and innovative recruitment and training solutions are starting to reap benefits."
