Social Care News: Sex offenders - Western Isles case impactslegislation

Children and young people who live with convicted sex offenders are to be better protected once the Management of Offenders Bill becomes law, says the Scottish Executive.

The comment follows a recent report into the collapse of the WesternIsles child abuse case by the Social Work Inspection Agency.

One of the 31 guidelines advises informing social work managers andfrontline staff if agencies are aware a convicted sex offender is actingas a parent.

The Scottish Executive said the Bill will require police, localauthorities and the prison service to work together to assess and managethe risk posed by sex offenders. The measures will be supported by clearprocedures among key agencies on information sharing.

The inspection agency called for guidance to help professionals decidewhat to do when a sex offender is living with children.
